The Vidyapeeth was established in 1921, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi in memory of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, emphasizing National Education alongside Swaraj, Swadeshi, and Boycott of Foreign Goods. The first Maharashtra Provincial Conference decided to create a National University in Maharashtra, resulting in the founding of Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth (TMV). Renowned scholars, including Dr. Kurtakoti and leaders like Shri B.G. Kher and Shri Y.B. Chavan, served as Chancellors.
Initially public-funded, TMV excelled in fields like Sanskrit, Ayurveda, and social sciences. Degrees were globally recognized even before its 1987 recognition as a “Deemed to be University” by the Government of India, enabling financial assistance and institutional growth. Pioneering non-formal education, TMV launched a distance B.A. program before IGNOU and YCMOU.
Overcoming financial constraints, TMV focused on Sanskrit, Ayurveda, and interdisciplinary social issues, contributing significantly to Indian heritage, health, and societal challenges. By 2000, it received recognition for its Distance Education programs and diversified into fields like management, nursing, and law, adhering to UGC and statutory council guidelines.
Equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and dedicated staff, TMV fosters quality education and research. Its efforts have been lauded by eminent personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Zakir Husain, and Dr. Anil Kakodkar for its academic rigor and cultural richness.
